Welcome Home x 3!

Whew!  After a couple of busy weeks frantically tying up loose ends in each house, PNOLA, with the help of United Way, has closed three houses and welcomed three families home in as many days.

The first was Friday the 18th's Welcome Home Ceremony for Mrs. Hilda Frank, who after over 5 years since flood waters wrecked her home can finally say that her ordeal is over and her house is restored.  The funding that allowed PNOLA to finish Mrs. Frank's house came through the state-funded Non-Profit Rebuilding Pilot Program that PNOLA is participating in by virtue of being a United Way partner agency.  Check out the  video below of our interview with Mrs. Frank and footage of her Welcome Home Ceremony.

And Monday, February 21st was the day of the Hope for the Holidays Welcome Home BBQ Extravaganza!  To recap, Hope for the Holidays is the name of a United Way of Greater New Orleans (UWGNO) campaign that was funded by New Orleans Saints players Darren Sharper and Roman Harper to bring two families back home.  They, along with Black Elk Energy and LACAP provided the money, while PNOLA provided the construction expertise and the labor to get the job done.

The afternoon started with the Welcome Home Ceremony for Sgt. John Johnson, who lives on Pauline St.  His house was gutted to the studs when we first walked into it in November, and now Sgt. Johnson can finally move he and his daughters back home.

Then everyone moved over to Gladiolus St. to celebrate the Welcome Home Ceremony for Toni and Tim Jones, who have spent the past five years renting apartment after apartment while trying to rebuild their home after being ripped off by a fraudulent contractor.

Through the hard work of our worksite crew Jen, Will, and Chris, our winter volunteers, and AmeriCorps NCCC teams River 7 and Fire 1 we were finally able to finish these houses.  We'd like to thank United Way of Greater New Orleans, Darren Sharper, Roman Harper, IrvingMorris, Louisiana Association of Community Action Partnerships, and Black Elk Energy for all of the contributions that they made to make this day happen for the Jones and Johnson families, and Rookies Sports Cafe for providing absolutely delicious BBQ meals at both celebrations.
